If anyone was to go through your clothing drawers right now they would ultimately find one thing inside every person’s clothing collection: Jeans. Jeans have become a standard in the clothing world due to their quality. Jeans are generally made from denim and are held on a pedestal due to their strength and also level of comfort. It all starts off with denim. Denim has a very long history itself and has had a few different changes in the components that create it. Starting off as being made from wool it transformed into being a combination of wool and cotton to end up today as being made solely from cotton. The cotton gives denim it’s comfort factor. Another distinct quality of jeans is their blue color. This has been a practice since the beginning. The blue color originally came from a dye derived from the indigo plant. Today though, many changes have been made and to make things more cost effective synthetic indigo has been developed to make the blue dye.

To make jeans you have to start on the steps referred to as carding and spinning. When carding, the cotton is placed inside a machine that contains bent wire brushes. These brushes will clean, straighten, and gather the cotton threads into small slivers. When many slivers are combined together they are then put onto a spinning machine that twists and stretched the cotton out to form a basic yarn. After all the cotton has been made into a yarn it is then moved to being dyed. Unlike most other materials denim is always dyed before it is woven into a product.

A large ball of yarn, which is referred to as a ball warp, is moved and dipped into the synthetic indigo dye mixture several different times in order to dye the yarn in layers. These different layers of dyeing are exactly why your jeans fade a little bit every time you wash it. After the yarn has been successfully dyes it is then slashed. Slashing is coating the yarn with sizing to make all of the threads stiffer and stronger. After this has been completed the yarn is now ready to be woven with any undyed filling yard threads.

The yarn is put onto mechanical looms and woven. The newly woven denim cloth is not cut into patterns which are then sewn together in a specific fashion to create the jeans you wear. Generally, all the cutting is completed with the aid of high-speed cutting machines. This allows extremely accurate pattern cuts to ensure uniform jeans every time. The sewing of the jeans are usually done in an assembly-line with the aid of human-operated sewing machine. This allows for absolute perfection as human eyes can ensure that the jeans are being pieced together properly.

Jeans come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. Sometimes with particular jeans you will add in a step of stonewashing the denim for a different look.
